What are Veneers?

A dental veneer is a ceramic shell that is shaped like a tooth. It is designed to improve the tooth’s appearance by changing its color, size and shape. They are typically applied to a tooth’s front surface. While composite resin can be used to make them, porcelain veneers last longer.

Why are Veneers Used?

Veneers are used to brighten and improve smiles. They are used on teeth that are discolored because of staining, excessive fluoride, tetracycline, root canal therapy, large resin fillings or other things that have caused changes in the coloring.

Veneers are also used for teeth that are broken, chipped or for teeth that have been worn down due to erosion or grinding. They are also beneficial for use on teeth that are misaligned, irregularly shaped or uneven.

They Do Not Cause Damage!

Veneers will not cause any damage to your teeth if the treatment is done by an experienced cosmetic dentist. The bonding process that seals a veneer to the front of the tooth is critical to preserving your teeth. When people talk about veneers damaging their teeth, they are most likely referring to cavities that have occurred behind a veneer. If the seal is not done correctly, it is possible for bacteria and other microbes to grow between the veneer and the front surface of a tooth.

Tooth Preparation

In order to get your teeth prepared for veneers, the dentist will remove about ½ millimeter of enamel from your tooth’s surface. That amount is about the equivalent of the size of the veneer that is being added to your tooth. Again this is hardly any damage to your teeth. It usually takes a few weeks for your actual veneers to be returned from the laboratory, so you will have temporary veneers until the permanent set has been placed.
